On the chilly night of January 29, first-year students gathered in the warmth of Donner Lecture Hall to enjoy one another's company and take their chances gambling on some high-stakes card games while sipping brightly colored drinks served to them by a smiling bartender.
What may have seemed like a violation of several laws and school regulations was actually an RA-sanctioned event. The second annual Casino Night lasted from 8 pm to midnight and offered students a relaxing diversion from their studious pursuits.
"Casino Night brings the fun of a casino - gambling, cards, specialty drinks, and spending an evening with friends - to Hanover College," said the event's chair, senior Liz Tepper.
Tepper is one of several RAs in Donner and Ide whose joint efforts helped the event come about. After a successful first Casino Night last year, the RAs decided to repeat the event this year. The event is paid for with Donner and Ide hall funds, and is free to all first-years and their guests.
"At the door 'money' was distributed," said Tepper, adding that a variety of card games were available on which the gamblers spent their money, including "poker, blackjack, euchre, roulette, or craps."
In addition to gambling tables, a bar was set up at which students could get snacks and specialty mocktails made by their friendly bartender.
At the end of the night, prizes were awarded to the luckiest gamblers. The prizes up for grabs included gift cards to Taco Bell and Wendy's, to name a few, as well as a grand prize of a year's subscription to Netflix.
"All in all, our event was successful," said Tepper. "Hopefully we can do it again next year."
