The Hanover men's basketball team used a stellar outside shooting performance to eke out a close victory over Heartland Conference rival Transylvania and move into a tie for second place in the league. Guards Jake Inman and Ryan Nowicki led the Panthers with four 3-point field goals each, and Hanover edged the visiting Pioneers 68-65 when a long, desperate three at the buzzer was off the mark. The result leaves both teams with an HCAC record of 6-4, behind only Anderson in the standings.
Both squads started the game red-hot from the floor and got the score into the 20s ten minutes in. The Panthers ended up shooting 53% from the field, including an amazing 13 of 22 from long range. Sophomore Mike Case of Indianapolis joined Inman and Nowicki in double-figure scoring, pitching in 11. He also led Hanover in rebounds with 7. The rebounding battle was even at 21-a reflection of how tightly the ballgame was contested.
Transylvania guard Tim Tierney sank two free throws late to break a 63-63 tie, but Hanover's Taylor Dial responded with the Panthers' last and most important 3-pointer of the game from the left corner that put the team up by one. Following a defensive stop that forced Transy to foul, Inman stepped up to the free throw line facing a one-and-one with under 5 seconds to go. He coolly buried his 16th and 17th points to close out the scoring.
Pioneer senior Blake McCowan led all scorers with 23 by shooting an outstanding 11 of 13 from the field. Transylvania ended up at an even 50% from the floor.
Hanover will look to extend their winning streak to four on the afternoon of the 30th at Defiance. Their next home game is against Bluffton the following Saturday.
