German Club provides an opportunity for Hanover students to explore their "appreciation for Germany's history, culture and language," said club secretary Stacy Buschhaus, a sophomore. With this notion in mind, the club has used the 2009-2010 school year as a chance to reinvigorate membership and the club's event program.
Many of German Club's officers were members of their high school German Clubs and have carried over their enthusiasm and ideas into Hanover's club. Buschhaus and Grace Stephenson, a first-year who is the club treasurer, encouraged other students to participate in the club, even if German is not their major or minor. "I think people just need to know that German Club is a club that anyone can join, and it doesn't take up much time at all. So, if anyone is interested at all in the German culture, they should join," Stephenson said. Stephenson also added that the people in the club are very welcoming.
The main goal of the club this year has been to increase student interest and membership. They are accomplishing this goal by hosting on- and off-campus events that highlight the club's interests.
Last semester, in October, the club held a Halloween-themed dinner that was co-sponsored by Kaleidoscope and Sociology-Anthropology Club. Several German foods were served and the meal had larger turn-out then German Club had planned. President, Ann Bladen, a sophomore, said, "The dinner was more successful than we imagined! We paid to feed 50 people, but we ran out of food… one of [the guests] was the Dali Lama, who was visiting campus…We felt very honored to serve him."
German Club will be taking a trip to the Hofbräuhaus on March 27th. Located in Newport, Kentucky, Hofbräuhaus is a German restaurant that features authentic cuisine and live folk music. The trip is open to all students but space is limited. Bladen stated that the club visited the Hofbräuhaus last year as well and decided to continue the trip after the small group that did go "was very pleased and requested that the club repeat the activity."
In addition to the trip to the Hofbräuhaus, Bladen stated that the German Club is planning a small event called "Kekse und Karten," which translates to "Cookies and Cards." The idea behind the event is that club members and guests will be able to gather together and play German card games, like Doppelkopf, and eat German snacks. This event will be hosted during Sprint Term.
In the future, the club wants to continue to host the same events and maybe a few more. Bladen, Buschhaus, and Stephenson agree that they all hope to continue to gain new members.
German Club meets once a month in the lobby of Science Hall and usually at a time that works for all members who are interested in coming. Any students who are interested in attending any German club meetings or future events can contact Ann Bladen or Dr. Brigitte Randall, the faculty advisor.

It's great that the German club is growing. Hopefully they'll continue to have events.

Thank you for writing and posting this article. Our little club really appreciates it. We've had a great school year and I anticipate that the following years will be even better. (Continued…)
